Polish Arab geldingDia Tuen

This week's Horse of the Week is a lovely Polish Arab gelding named Dia Tuen. He is 15.1 hh, 20 years old and lives on a farm in the rolling hills of the Oak Ridges Moraine near Uxbridge, Ontario. According to his owner, Tuen is Mr. Personality Plus and is a barn favorite because of his sweet, kind nature. His flaxen streaked mane has some of the girls calling him Fabio. He gets along well with his paddock mates but tends to be at the bottom of the pecking order because he is so gentle. This is what Tuen's owner had to say about him:

"I have owned him for six years and he has become my very good friend. He knows his name and will often come when called. He nickers to me when he hears my voice or recognizes my footsteps… probably because he knows that I may have carrots for him.

In past, he has played polo, and while he is very quick and agile, he did not like the confrontational aspect of Polo. We had our own beginners Polo club at the facility last year and he was patient with me while I learned and forgiving when I bopped him in the head with the mallet.

We have access to about 2000 acres of Durham Forest and enjoy hacking in the good weather. He does not like going out on his own but will happily follow either of my dogs if they are out in front. When he is with other horses, Tuen is very keen to take the lead when we are headed in the direction of home.

We are both learning dressage and with his graceful, floating gaits, he is a pleasure to ride and to watch. He is a quick study and quite willing to try and do whatever I ask of him, even when he is not completely sure of what I am asking.

Our most recent undertaking is a precision riding group. Eight to ten of us get together every Tuesday night for a practice and on May 13th we have our first demonstration ride at Elgin Park in Uxbridge (2006). Performing before spectators will be a new experience for both of us."

Congratulations to Dia Tuen for being our May 29th, 2006 Horse of the Week!
